BAR HARBOR- (July 4, 2005) The Mount Desert Island Marathon is proud to announce the first 'MDIslander Challenge Cup' sponsored by the MDIslander newspaper as part of the festivities surrounding the annual MDI Marathon. Runners or walkers from individual towns located on MDI that register to walk or run in the Sunday, October 16, event will be automatically entered in the challenge. In marathoning, generally speed is the key to winning awards; in this case the' MDIslander Challenge Cup' will be awarded to the town who has the most total finishers regardless of their speed. The only criteria are that they have to finish. The perpetual cup and bragging rights that go with it will reside in the winning town for the ensuing year. Winning members of the team will also get special awards. To help get potential runners and walkers ready to cover the demanding 26 mile 385 yard route the official MDI Marathon training schedules will be provided. These schedules will be offered free of charge at www.mdimarathon.org or available at a short presentation that is designed to help anyone get started and answer the common questions which arise when deciding to complete in a marathon. The meeting will be held at the Neighborhood House (time/date TBA, keep watching our website) which is located at the far end of Main Street in Northeast Harbor. (Please remember that before starting any exercise regime you must consult your physician first.) One of the biggest misconceptions about completing a marathon is that you need to be an Olympic caliber athlete, which is not true. Hundreds of everyday people each year start and finish marathons. It is our hope to encourage many who otherwise might not try, to promote physical fitness and to provide a little friendly inter-island rivalry between towns with the introduction of the MDIslander/MDI Marathon Challenge Cup. Over 1500 runners from all 50 states and many countries abroad have come to test themselves at past editions. We hope to see many islanders join them. To register to run or walk visit the official MDI Marathon website: www.mdimarathon.org. Remember the MDI Marathon is strictly limited to the first 1000 who register. | |
